The thing about stress is that most people don’t fully notice it until the body starts speaking up on their behalf – through clenched jaws, tight shoulders, headaches, exhaustion, or a constant sense of restlessness. That feeling where even slowing down or trying to relax somehow still feels hard.
At The Zen Wrangler Bodyworks in Old Town Lafayette, Kim Rasmussen works somewhere between therapeutic bodywork, intuition and nervous system reset. Though she’d probably explain it in a much more cosmic cowgirl vibe kind of way.
Before opening her studio in Old Town, Kim spent years in corporate sales and marketing, navigating the kind of high-pressure environments where stress becomes so normal you stop questioning it. But somewhere along the way, she became fascinated by wellness, human behavior and the very real ways stress travels through the body.
“I remember telling my first massage therapist when I was 19, ‘I have to learn how to do that. That was magic!’” That thought stayed with her for years before life finally cracked the door open wide enough to walk through it.
Massage school led to sports massage work in Denver and then into spa environments. This progressed into an even deeper exploration with Reiki, sound healing, TMJ work, hypnotherapy, and now somatic coaching. Not in a “wellness trend” kind of way. More from a genuine curiosity about why people become disconnected from themselves in the first place, what truly helps them reconnect, and what supports them in moving toward the life, version of themselves, or direction they authentically want to step into.
Because according to Kim, the body is usually trying to tell us something long before we’re willing to listen.
Stress settles and patterns build. The shoulder that always hurts might be connected to the way you sit at your desk all day… or to the weight of grief your body never fully set down. Jaw tension may have less to do with your teeth and more to do with the pressure, stress, and unspoken tension you’ve been carrying for far too long.

As Kim puts it… “Everything’s connected. Fortunately, unfortunately.”
That awareness shapes the way she approaches her work. Sessions are intentionally customized and conversational. Some clients want deep therapeutic bodywork and others are looking for relaxation, emotional release or simply an hour where nobody needs anything from them. Sometimes it’s massage and sometimes it’s sound healing. Sometimes it’s just finally exhaling for the first time all week, enjoying the peace and not having to make a decision.
And unlike wellness spaces that can sometimes feel overly polished or intimidating, The Zen Wrangler’s studio space feels deeply human.
There’s colorful vintage furniture Kim refurbished herself. The Hamsa gong and skull art on the walls. Tibetan bowls tucked into corners. Gold accents and many many moons. Cowgirl hat and possibly a lasso. A little bit of humor woven into everything. The kind of place that immediately tells you perfection is not the requirement for showing up.

The name itself came together the same way a lot of things in Kim’s world seem to: half intuition, half accidental magic.
While working in a sports massage studio, she jokingly described her work style as helping clients “wrangle their zen.” Remembering that years prior, her acupuncturist aunt had told her she needed to “wrangle in her zen” – referring to her high energy, own stress and burnout. There was a realization and the phrase stuck. Eventually, it became her business name, and what began as a personal transformation evolved into an entire vibe.
And maybe that’s what makes The Zen Wrangler resonate right now. In a world that constantly asks people to push harder, optimize more and stay switched on at all times, Kim’s approach feels like permission to pause long enough to actually notice yourself again.
“You don’t have to earn relaxation.”
For people curious what exactly a “cosmic cowgirl nervous system reset” entails, here’s a little glimpse into the menu of offerings:
- Massage – Think therapeutic massage with a softer landing. Deep tissue work blended with calming spa touches, hot towels and intuitive adjustments based on what your body actually needs that day. Great for people carrying stress in approximately every muscle they own.
- Head, Face and Neck, including Intraoral TMJ Dysfunction Protocol Bodywork (Mindful Expressionism®) – If you just realized you’ve been clenching your jaw while reading this, maybe start here. This specialty work focuses on the fascial reconstruction and muscles connected to jaw tension, migraine headaches, neck pain and mobility stress patterns people are needing relief. Intense in the best possible “wow I needed that” kind of way.
- Sound Healing + Sound Baths — Crystal and Tibetan bowls, chimes, drums and more for vibrational and full nervous system reset energy. Some people describe it as meditation. Others say it feels like their brain finally got quiet for an hour and others float on out into the cosmos. Kim also hosts group sound bath events locally, including monthly right up the road at the Bob L. Burger Recreation Center.
- Reiki Energy Healing — Gentle, calming and deeply restorative for people who want something a little less physical than massage but still want energy movement, to feel grounded and reset. Even if you’re Reiki-curious-but-skeptical, Kim somehow makes it all feel approachable.
- Hypnotherapy + Somatic Coaching — One of the newer additions to her work and something she’s especially passionate about right now. This helps people move through anxiety, visibility fears, stress patterns and mental blocks that keep them stuck. Especially helpful for entrepreneurs, leaders, creatives and people just trying to reconnect with themselves and create a new story.
- Integrative Sessions — Honestly, this might be the real specialty. Kim tends to blend modalities based on what comes up during the session. Massage plus Reiki. Sound plus bodywork. Relaxation mixed with therapeutic focus. The whole philosophy is less “pick package A or B” and more “what does your nervous system need today?”

Like so many other business owners in Old Town Lafayette, Kim felt connected to this location after visiting repeatedly, looking at spaces in other towns and spending weekends wandering Old Town. She kept feeling pulled back here.
“I looked in different towns and nothing felt right. They didn’t have the same energy.”
It’s hard to explain exactly what that energy is, but people talk about it often in Old Town. Businesses here tend to feel less manufactured and more like extensions of the people behind them. A little eccentric. A little fearless. A little hard to categorize. The kind of places that could only exist because someone trusted their instincts enough to try.
Which, honestly, the vibe feels very cosmic cowgirl.
