In 1992, a group of business owners in Old Town Lafayette got together and formed a non-profit organization called Lafayette Old Town Merchants Association (LOTMA). The mission of this organization was straightforward: to make Old Town Lafayette a destination for shoppers, visitors, and community events; to develop an economically-friendly community in Old Town; to establish Old Town as the Heart of the City of Lafayette; and to promote collaboration throughout the Old Town community. Since its inception, LOTMA—now called Lafayette Old Town Association (LOTA)—has created and continues to assist with some extremely successful events, namely the Oatmeal Festival, Peach Festival, and Home for the Holidays. LOTA has consistently tried to enhance business and community in Old Town and in Lafayette as a whole.

Over the years, LOTA has experienced ups and downs in leadership and membership, and during recent trying economic times it had to confine its efforts to fulfilling only its most basic mission. However, with a new, energetic, and experienced board of directors, LOTA is now reinvigorated to expand our mission and membership. In January 2010, we re-wrote our bylaws so that LOTA is now a "business and community organization," open to residents. In addition, we set four strategic goals for 2010:

  1. To increase membership, with an emphasis on diversity (ethnic, geographic, residential, etc.), in order to increasingly foster a sense of community in Lafayette
  2. To become an information source for businesses and residents
  3. To cooperatively market businesses in Old Town
  4. To pursue funding available to non-profit organizations.
