Lafayette has a fascinating architectural and economic history. Did you know that:

public baselinePublic Road was one of the first designated public automobile thoroughfares in the United States, named as such in the early 1900s. That's why it's called Public Road.

Baseline Road runs along the 40th parallel. On May 30, 1854, the Kansas-Nebraska Act created the Kansas Territory (south of the 40th parallel) and the Nebraska Territory (north of the 40th parallel). On February 28, 1861, the western portion of the Kansas Territory and the southwestern portion of the Nebraska Territory were incorporated into the new Colorado Territory. The 40th parallel became the primary baseline for surveying the land in the eastern portion of the new territory, and a road was eventually cut along the survey baseline. That's why it's called Baseline Road.
